on addiction

26 January 2010

O Fair, the old, agéd need
Covers over my soul once again;
The demands of Lover and Belovéd,
Of Enemy and Friend
Consume all that is commonplace,
Replacing it with the Desire
(That raging, inner fire) for a life lived
Outside of all constraints–

O Fair, well do I know the end of those desires;
Consumption and waste,
Life filled to overflowing with hatred and pride
Bred from a certain causal disregard for Fate;
And at that Road’s end:
Terror and Madness and Want.
