at the silent doors of night

8 June 2010

(The anaphora of this one is from my youthful mis-hearing of the refrain sung at the Benedictine Office of Compline: “In the silent hours of night//Bless the Lord.”)

at the silent doors of night
let all who wander become free
with discipline and sincerity

at the silent doors of night
bring flowers to the heavenly altar
where all rational tyranny falters

at the silent doors of night
sit in sacred silence, breathe slow
be filled with truth at heaven’s window

at the silent doors of night
bless the Lord, oh soul, bless the Lord
at the silent doors of night
